SEVERAL newly installed street lights along Chiremba Road and Tarisa Road in Ruwa have been damaged by motorists, prompting the local authority to appeal for public assistance in identifying those responsible.
The street lights were recently installed by the Ruwa Local Board as part of efforts to improve road safety, enhance visibility and strengthen security in the community.
However, according to the local authority, a number of the lighting poles have already been severely damaged after being struck by vehicles due to what it described as driver negligence and recklessness.
In a notice, Ruwa Local Board public relations officer Ms Josephine Mwaitirwa said the destruction of the infrastructure was reversing gains made in improving public lighting and creating additional safety risks for road users.
Ms Mwaitirwa appealed to residents to assist the council in holding offenders accountable by reporting incidents involving damage to public infrastructure.
“Council requests the active assistance of the community. If you witness a vehicle hitting a streetlight along Chiremba Road or Tarisa Road, please immediately record the vehicle registration number, note the vehicle make, model and colour, and report these details to council offices straight away,” she said.
She warned that motorists who damage public property and leave the scene commit a serious offence.
“Hit-and-run damage to public property is a serious offence. Providing a registration number ensures that the responsible driver pays for the repairs rather than the ratepayer,” said Ms Mwaitirwa.
