POLICE have appealed to motorists to observe the country’s traffic laws and ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy to ensure an accident and crime free festive season.
In a statement, national spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said police would impound all unroadworthy and defective vehicles while people who flout road rules would be dealt with in terms of the law.
She urged travellers to plan their journeys and avoid travelling at night.
“Drivers shouldn’t speed or try to carry excess passengers with a view to maximize profits during this holiday,” said Snr Asst Comm Charamba.
She said drivers should avoid driving while under the influence of alcohol and warned motorists against attempting to cross flooded rivers and bridges.
Turning to the increasing housebreaking and robbery cases, Snr Asst Comm Charamba advised the public to be alert and not leave their properties unattended during the holidays.
“The public can utilise the house under supervision scheme offered by the police to curb cases of unlawful entry and theft. The ZRP will intensify patrols in all residential, farming and industrial areas with a view of curbing crime,” she said.
Companies, churches, business people and individuals were discouraged from keeping large sums of money at home or at their offices at it attracts criminals.
Snr Asst Comm Charamba urged the public to deposit their money with financial institutions and to access it only when conducting business transactions.
Couples were encouraged to seek dialogue and counselling when facing marital problems.
“As we merry-make and enjoy the holiday, police are warning the public against taking the law into their own hands by fighting or striking one another with dangerous weapons such as knives, axes and iron bars after engaging in disputes which in most cases end up in murder,” Snr Asst Comm Charamba added.
