Mountaineers coach eyes T20 championship title

AS the 2017/ 2018 season beckons, Mutare-based domestic cricket franchise Mountaineers’ coach Shepherd Makunura has already set his targets and is eyeing the T20 championship title as well as another major cup.

Makunura said he is expecting stiff competition when the country’s four teams clash in the T20 tournament. Despite a close miss in the Pro50 championship contest, Makunura remains optimistic that his side will, at least, win two of the three cups this season. He is also gunning for retaining the Logan Cup. Last season, Mountaineers won the Logan Cup after two years of coming very close.

“We have started our training sessions today at Mutare Sports Club. We are working on our fitness and skills. “We are looking ahead to a brighter season, which will kick off with the T20 tournament. This time around I’m targeting the Pro50 championship. I would love to retain the Logan Cup. My target is to win at least two of the three cups this season.

“Our training sessions are going on very well, with most of the players in attendance. We will be having a team meeting on Wednesday, that is when we will know the fixtures for the T20 and the new players that we will sign this season,” he said.

Makunura said this time around he will not only focus on victory, but playing some good and exciting cricket. “Last season, the boys did very well. Some of our games were affected by bad weather, especially when we played the Pro50 championships. The games were affected by heavy rains.

“The other thing that I think also affected us is the disruption of fixtures. “The programme would just change here and there. We hope this time around all things will be in order. However, we will not dwell on that a lot, but we will work hard and try and correct our mistakes.

“All we want now are good results,” he said.
