It seems most people can do anything as long as it brings food on the table, no matter how evil it can be. This is a subject dealt with in a musical comedy titled “Things Some People Do for Money”. Written and directed by upcoming producer Gibson Takawira, the movie explores different situations that people go through and in an attempt to make a living end up devising evil ways of getting money.
The movie has 14 characters and is in Shona language with subtitles in English. In an interview, Takawira said, “In this movie, we are trying to tell people to live a clean life rather than commit evil deeds to earn a living.” The comedy, with good quality picture, was shot in Waterfalls, Epworth and Hatfield. However, there is room for improvement for some actors who seem to lose concentration on the scene and show that they are acting.
It stars Searchmore Takavada as the protagonist and plays the role of Matsotsi. Matsotsi fails to meet his targets in life and spends the greater part of his life heading cattle in the rural areas. His uncle, Toffy is in a business partnership with a friend Bhutusi. The two own a clothing shop but their business is not viable and to revamp it they visit a local witchdoctor. After the expected turnaround failed to materialise, they revisit him again and are made to drink the witch-doctor’s urine. They are promised a good fortune that comes with a price and are instructed to bring human parts for the rituals.
Toffy plans to eliminate his nephew Matsoti with the aid of Bhutusi, but their intention hits a snag. It is left to be seen as to whether their business thrives or crumbles in part two of the comedy. Takawira, who hails from Waterfalls, is no stranger to acting. He has been in the film industry for more than a decade.
