Moyo anchors Scottland’s chase for glory

STEADILY, Scottland defender Kelvin Moyo has worked his way back into the national spotlight, cementing his place as one of Zimbabwe’s trusted centre-backs.

The 2025 Soccer Star of the Year runner-up has risen to prominence under national team coach Ramon Catala, featuring in the Warriors’ opening two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone and DR Congo.

His Scottland defensive partner, Peter Muduhwa, was an unused substitute in both matches, but the duo could reunite when Mabviravira host Bulawayo Chiefs in a ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup quarter-final clash at Rufaro on Sunday.

For Moyo, however, the immediate challenge is bigger than personal milestones, as Scottland continue their pursuit of what would be a historic domestic treble.

The Mabvuku-based outfit are firmly in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title race, leading the standings with five matches remaining, while they can also win this big cup.

They are also representing Zimbabwe in the CAF Champions League, leaving them with a demanding schedule and little room for complacency.

And Moyo believes managing the pressure will be crucial as the season enters its decisive stages.

“We have to try and manage the pressure but at the same time take each game as it comes,” Moyo told Zimpapers Sports Hub.

The 33-year-old will be particularly motivated when he comes up against his former paymasters, Bulawayo Chiefs, but knows his former club will not simply roll over.

The Ninjas, who lifted the Chibuku Super Cup in 2022, are currently six points clear of the relegation zone and will be eager to upset Scottland’s treble ambitions.

“I’m really looking forward to the game against Bulawayo Chiefs.

“It’s not going to be an easy game, Chiefs are a tough team but I will just keep it simple, play my normal game and try and help the team progress to the next round,” added Moyo, who has also turned out for Dynamos and FC Platinum.

Moyo’s resurgence has been reflected in his performances for the champions, having finished second in last year’s Soccer Star of the Year race behind teammate Washington Navaya, who also claimed the Golden Boot.

Another consistent campaign has placed him among the players expected to feature on the 2026 Soccer Stars calendar.

His importance to Scottland is also evident in the team’s defensive statistics, with Mabviravira boasting the best defensive record in the league after conceding just 10 goals in 29 matches.

But Moyo is quick to share the credit, insisting that Scottland’s defensive solidity is a collective effort rather than an individual achievement.

“We just keep pushing on, working as a family.

“Credit also goes to my teammates because when we win, we win as a team and when we lose, we do so as a unit,” he said.
