Moyo’s return propels Zvawanda

HERENTALS QUEENS striker Praynance Zvawanda is back to her best, thanks to left-back Alice Moyo’s return, who relentlessly brings perfect crosses, which the former often turns in.

The mainstay of the Students’ successful charge at the Women’s Super League in 2022, Zvawanda’s form took a nosedive last season despite Herentals’ unbeaten run in their defence of the crown. Moyo had been signed by Zambian side Green Buffaloes before she returned home, but went back to her childhood club Faith Drive Academy instead. She is now back to the Herentals Group of Schools and Colleges-owned team and Zvawanda seems to be benefiting more from that move.

After scoring the only goal in Herentals’ 1-0 opening day win over rivals Chapungu two weeks ago, the 23-year-old grabbed a hattrick in their 9-0 walloping of ZRP Harare last week.

And she is looking to carry the goal-scoring form to Gweru this morning where they will play MSU Queens at the MSU Grounds.

“The aim remains the same. We need to go out there and impose ourselves, play our game and deny them playing space,” said Zvawanda, who can also play as a 10.

“Yes, the return of Alice (Moyo) has reignited me and I am flying. But I should also admit that despite the absence of Alice last season, I was a bit off.

“I just couldn’t really be myself. I was rushing things up and you know coming from a very good season I had in 2022, it was very difficult.

“My teammates are very supportive and we are grinding again. The wish is to score in each and every game, but that’s impossible. However, I will try as much as I can to do that.”

Black Rhinos, who lead the standings due to a superior goal difference over the Students will entertain Mutare City at 2 Brigade, while Chapungu Queens are away to Guruve where they play Conduit at Mudhindo.

All the games will be preceded by a moment of silence with players and officials wearing black armbands in honour of former ZIFA Technical Director and decorated football personality Nelson Matongorere who died on Thursday.
