A 29-YEAR-OLD Mozambican man, Fanito Arthur Mationane, has been fined US$150 for smuggling second-hand clothes into Zimbabwe.
Mationane appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mrs Annie Ndiraya, facing charges under Section 182 of the Customs and Excise Act (Chapter 23:02).
Prosecutor Mrs Tafadzwa Zulu outlined that Mationane was arrested by police at the Forbes Border Post in Mutare while attempting to smuggle 10kg of second-hand jackets.
Mrs Zulu said: “On July 29, at around 9am, police officers encountered Mationane carrying the second-hand jackets through an illegal crossing point. He failed to produce a declaration form and was subsequently arrested,” she said.
Mationane pleaded guilty to the offense.
In addition to the fine, he was ordered to be deported back to Mozambique.
The seized goods, valued at ZWG3 405, were forfeited to the State.
