THE Member of the National Assembly for Bubi, Cde Clifford Sibanda, yesterday said he was planning to set up an education fund to cater for the less privileged pupils in his constituency. In an interview, Cde Sibanda said the fund would pay fees for intelligent primary school pupils who were facing financial challenges.
“The fund will benefit five intelligent vulnerable pupils from each of the 74 primary schools in my constituency. We want to identify three girls and two boys from each school,” said Cde Sibanda.
He expressed concern over the dilapidated state of infrastructure at most schools and said there was an urgent need to refurbish the existing classrooms as well as building new ones.
“Bubi constituency has many resettlement areas and most schools have no proper classrooms, accommodation for teachers and furniture for use by pupils.
“Two-thirds of the schools in the resettlement areas are operating at former white farmers’ farmhouses. These houses do not provide a conducive learning environment for pupils,” said Cde Sibanda.
“Teachers use some of the houses for accommodation and at some schools the teachers use houses that were formerly used by farm workers,” he said.
Cde Sibanda urged the business community operating in Bubi district to come on board and assist the Government in improving infrastructure at the schools.
“Bubi is a mining area and we expect companies exploiting minerals here to assist by funding development projects,” he said.
Cde Sibanda said the companies could contribute money through the Community Share Ownership Scheme Trusts.
