Tengwe Country Club will be converted into a vocational training centre, if the lobbying efforts of Hurungwe East legislator Chenjerai Kangausaru succeed
The envisaged institution will be a centre of excellence in the constituency equipping youths with vocational skills in motor mechanics, cookery, baking, animal husbandry, farming, and metal fabrications.
The now unkempt country club, once the envy of the district, was built during the colonial era but is now little used.
Speaking on the sidelines of a memorial sports gala for his late father Dan Maendaenda Kangausaru and late mother Etheni Mufunga, the MP said there was need to empower youths with life skills so that they became economically active and refrained from drugs and substance use.
So he saw there was scope of transforming this derelict recreational centre situated in Ward 2, at Tengwe, into a vocational training centre for the multitudes of youths in Hurungwe East.
Once trained, young people would become economically active and contribute to economic growth. While the youths were the leaders of tomorrow they could not take over that role of leader if they were addicts, hence the memorial gala and heroes commemoration blended with sporting activities to promote wellness among the people, said Mr Kangausaru.
The legislator said he was engaging the Ministry of Youth and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the training centre became a reality and soon started producing graduates in needed fields. Women and the disabled members of the community would also be enrolled in skills such as making detergents.
Speaking at the same event, Tengwe Farmers Association secretary general Stanley Nyadzombe backed the establishment of a vocational training centre at Tengwe, underscoring its importance in the area famous for tobacco.
“The training centre is most welcome because we have many youths who can benefit skills, particularly those who want to venture into tobacco which is grown in this constituency,” said Nyazombe.
His organisation was helping with equipment and fuel to rehabilitate the road network ahead of the setting up of the vocational training centre.
