The High Court is set to witness a crucial turn of events this afternoon as the pre-sentencing hearing of business partners, Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe unfolds.
The duo, recently convicted in the sensational US$7 million Presidential Goat Scheme, faces the next chapter in their legal saga after their initial hearing, scheduled for last Wednesday, was stalled due to the absence of their defence team.
Mpofu and Chimombe’s fraud case centred around a staggering US$7.7 million contract to supply goats—a venture that turned out to be riddled with deceit.
Their company, Blackdeck Private Limited, spearheaded by Mpofu, clinched the lucrative tender but failed to deliver on their promises.
While they claimed to have mobilised over 32 000 goats, a mere 3 713 were verified, leaving the Government shortchanged by a jaw-dropping US$7,3 million.
Having exhausted their attempts to access a written judgment and appeal to the Supreme Court, the convicted pair now awaits the court’s decision on their fate.
Today’s proceedings will determine their sentences, marking a dramatic climax to a case that has laid bare the audacity of high-stakes fraud.
