LONG-DISTANCE runner Isaac Mpofu says he is recovering well from a hip injury that has side-lined him for the past few months.
The 33-year-old, who is yet to confirm a return date, remains focused on qualifying for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, despite having missed some key qualifiers.
“I am recovering well. I think the recovery programme is going on well and I expect to be back in training soon. My focus remains on the World Championships qualification despite this setback,” said Mpofu.
The marathoner, who made his Olympic debut in 2024 and placed 19th, is targeting the 2025 global showpiece set for September 13-21 in Japan.
“My coaches and medical team have been very supportive throughout this process. I know it’s not ideal to miss races, but I’m keeping a positive mindset. The target is to be in top shape when it matters most.”
Mpofu capped a strong 2024 season with a bronze medal at the African Games in Accra, Ghana, clocking 1hr 05min 58sec to finish third.
Meanwhile, the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) will host a Level Two sprints and hurdles coaches’ certification course at White City Stadium from April 19 to 24. The programme, overseen by World Athletics-appointed course directors, is limited to 15 participants.

Coinciding with the coaching clinic is the return of the Baldmin Bulawayo Marathon, back after nearly two decades since its last sponsorship by Coca-Cola in 2005.
Once one of the country’s premier road races, the marathon is renowned for its scenic route through Bulawayo’s western suburbs and attracts both local and international competitors.
Registration, which opened on January 15, closes on April 18. Race packs can be collected at White City Stadium from April 16 to 18 between 09:00 and 17:00, and on race day between 05:00 and 06:00.
Athletes will receive race number confirmations via SMS or email and must bring valid ID and confirmation messages to collect their packs. Those collecting on behalf of others must also provide proof of identity.
The race will feature 21km, 10km, and 5km categories, with entry set at US$15. Organisers hope the event will promote fitness, community engagement, and support for local causes.
Separately, an all-female track and field event titled Queens with Wigs will be held at White City Stadium on July 5.
Entry is pegged at US$2, with events including the 3 000m, 100m hurdles, 100m, 50m, 1500m, 4×100m relay, 400m, 800m, and 200m. Field events will feature long jump, high jump, triple jump, shot put, discus and javelin. — @innocentskizoe
