Government ministers and parliamentarians have begun Covid-19 prevention awareness campaigns in communities they represent after being directed by President Mnangagwa last week to help raise public awareness on the deadly virus.
The campaign will also see legislators spreading information on the national vaccination programme as the country seeks to achieve herd immunity.
Announcing the enhanced Level Four national lockdown measures last week, President Mnangagwa said all Ministers and Members of Parliament would be expected to disseminate information on vaccination in their constituencies.
In Beitbridge, Members of Parliament Albert Nguluvhe (Beitbridge East) and Ruth Maboyi (Beitbridge West) intensified awareness campaigns in their respective constituencies where they encouraged people to be vaccinated and to continue observing the laid down Covid-19 preventative protocols.
“The rate of new infections in our country and district is worrying. It is very critical that we minimise unnecessary movements, stop all social soccer tournaments and continue observing covid-19 protocols,” said Cde Nguluvhe, who circulated a one-minute Covid-19 awareness video on social media platforms.
Cde Maboyi urged security personnel in the border town to tighten measures along the Limpopo River to prevent illegal crossing into and out of the country.
In Mashonaland West, Minister Mliswa-Chikoka who heads the provincial Covid-19 taskforce, led a team across Chinhoyi town where a public address system was used to broadcast awareness messages.
She said the campaign was in line with the recent Level Four Covid-19 guidelines announced by President Mnangagwa directing them to carry out awareness campaigns on Covid-19 vaccination.
Members of Parliament in the province including Zvimba North representative and Local Government Deputy Minister, Marian Chombo and Mines and Mining Development Deputy Minister and Sanyati constituency representative Polite Kambamura also went on awareness campaigns in their areas.
In Mashonaland East, Seke constituency legislator Cde Munyaradzi Kashambe also embarked on the awareness campaign starting with wards 4, 7, 8, 9 and 13.
“We are encouraging people to be vaccinated and adhere to all regulations meant to curb the spread of the pandemic,” Cde Kashambe said.
Chikomba Central legislator, who is also Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister, Felix Mhona was in his constituency over the weekend conducting the same programme.
“I am doing this in all wards. The word is people should get vaccinated and also religiously comply with all health regulations to curb and end this pandemic,” said Cde Mhona.
Mutoko South Member of Parliament Herbert Shumbamhini was also in his area educating the public on the advantages of being vaccinated.
“I urge everyone to be vaccinated, let us all contribute to stop the spread of this deadly pandemic. Together we can win this fight,” he said.
Zanu-PF Midlands provincial vice chairperson, Cde Rabson Nyathi said MPs across the province had started outreach programmes and were conducting awareness campaigns on Covid-19.
“We are mobilising local leaderships at ward and cell levels as we take heed of the President’s call to educate everyone about Covid-19,” he said.
Cde Nyathi said they were working with members of opposition political parties in the fight against the pandemic.
Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolutions, Cde Monica Mavhunga implored people living along the border with Zambia to stop crossing into the neighbouring country for now as the country was struggling to contain Covid-19.
Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Cde Kazembe Kazembe recently said Government had availed 150 vehicles to assist in enforcing lockdown measures.
