He said Parliament recommended that each MP be paid US$75 per sitting.

“What happened is that there has been correspondence between the Office of the Speaker and the Office of the President in regards with the outstanding issue,” said Minister Matinenga.
“US$75 was suggested as an allowance and this issue has been placed before the leadership.”
Minister Matinenga said initially there were plans to deal with the outstanding allowances concurrently with what the MPs owed for the purchase of vehicles.
But this was later dropped.

Some MPs wanted Government to offset the debt for their car loans with what they owe them in sitting allowances.
“At one time it was considered that this issue would be dealt with at the same time with the motor vehicle issue, but it has been agreed that the issue of allowances be addressed on its own without linking it to the motor vehicles,” said Minister Matinenga.

“Very soon, MPs would be told what is due to them.”
Minister Matinenga said the figures would vary depending on attendance by each MP.
Parliamentarians have been pressing the Government to improve their conditions of service and also want to be paid pension if their term of office was cut.

The parliamentary term is likely to be cut with general elections set for next year.
The term was supposed to expire in 2013.
