Masiyephambili Junior Primary School in Bulawayo combined anti-drug awareness, sport, entertainment and fashion in a vibrant event on Saturday, using the power of extracurricular activities to promote a drug-free lifestyle while nurturing learners’ confidence and talents.
The day’s activities began with an anti-drug awareness parade from the school to Bulawayo’s city centre before learners, teachers and parents marched back carrying placards bearing messages discouraging drug and substance abuse.
A major highlight of the event was the Mr and Miss Masiyephambili modelling competition, which attracted more than 100 contestants from Early Childhood Development (ECD) to Grade Seven. Following several rounds of competition, 16 finalists battled it out for the coveted crowns.
After impressing the judges with their confidence, poise and stage presence, Aisha Ndachengedzwa was crowned Miss Masiyephambili, while Mthokozisi Dube walked away with the Mr Masiyephambili title.
Speaking after the event, headmaster Ntuliso Ntuli said extracurricular activities such as modelling play a vital role in building learners’ self-confidence while positively influencing their academic performance.
“When children participate in activities like these, they develop passion, confidence and positive energy, which also translates into improved performance in school. I encourage parents to continue supporting their children,” he said.
Deputy head Sijabulisiwe Nyathi applauded parents, teachers, learners and guests for contributing to the success of the event.
“On behalf of Masiyephambili Junior Primary School, thank you all for making the modelling event a success. We appreciate the learners’ confidence and the parents’ support, and we look forward to your continued support for our children,” she said.
Beyond the pageant, learners showcased their sporting abilities in soccer and netball matches, while Bulawayo content creator Young Toss kept the crowd entertained with lively performances. Parents also joined the festivities, taking to the runway in a fun-filled modelling session and dancing alongside their children, creating a warm family atmosphere.
