Mr and Ms Ugly Zimbabwe, an unconventional modelling pageant celebrating individuality and inner beauty, is set to make a return after a 13-year hiatus. The event is scheduled to take place at Sisterhood Gardens in Beitbridge on February 24.

Honesty Inno Chenjerai, the events management team leader, revealed that the idea originated in 2009 and saw successful editions in 2009, 2010, and 2011.

“The Mr Ugly show originated as a mere idea in 2009 when our team, along with the co-founder of the pageant, Dominic Gwatirisa, were casually discussing with friends. The inaugural edition took place in 2009 at Pagomo Leisure Center in Beitbridge, and Mr Makoma emerged as the winner. The second edition, held in 2010 at the same venue, featured sports personality Moses Chunga as the guest.

“The third edition, held in 2011 in Harare, was a massive success,” said Chenjerai.

However, due to various reasons, the organisers were dispersed to different cities, making it challenging to continue the event. The decision to revive the event was prompted by requests from the local community in Beitbridge, especially after an appearance on Lotsha FM.

The primary objective of the pageant is to motivate, inspire, and provide a platform for individuals to celebrate their unique qualities and inner beauty. The event is organised by Sundrive Coalition, renowned for initiatives such as Sundrive Champions, Beitbridge Business Summit and Awards, and Mat South Business Summit and Awards.

To participate in Mr and Ms Ugly Zimbabwe, individuals are encouraged to submit their photo, name, and address on WhatsApp to +263777868740. Nominations will be accepted until February 10, with the organisers welcoming participants from all over Zimbabwe.

Chenjerai stated that the event is designed to be a family fun day, embracing a lighthearted and humorous approach.

The organisers have budgeted approximately R10 000 for the winners’ prizes but are actively seeking sponsorship from different organisations to enhance the event’s impact and create lasting memories.
