WORLD Boxing Federation Super Flyweight champion Tinashe “Mr Jones” Majoni will be chasing redemption when he returns to the ring against Malawi’s Sean Josephy in a non-title bout at Kwekwe Sports Arena on September 25.
Majoni suffered only his second defeat in 14 fights when he was beaten by Tanzania’s Mchanja Yohanna in February, and the 27-year-old is eager to get back to winning ways at the third edition of the Trabablas Boxing Tournament.
Majoni’s other defeat came in 2022 when he lost to South Africa’s Phumelela Cafu in the Eastern Cape.
“I don’t know much about him (Josephy), but enough to handle him,” a confident Majoni told Zimpapers Sports Hub.
Majoni, who boasts a 12-2 record, believes victory over Josephy will provide an important confidence boost as he waits for confirmation of his next WBF title defence.
“When I suffered the defeat in Tanzania, it was a huge dent to my record,” he said.
“So, it is very important for me to win this upcoming fight. I am excited and ready to give the best of myself on the day.” Josephy, 22, has a modest 2-2-0 record, but Majoni is treating the bout seriously as he prepares for another crack at defending the WBF Super Flyweight belt he won last year.
“This will obviously be a tune-up fight as I am waiting for confirmation on my next title defence fight,” he said.
“That issue is being handled by my manager. I only have to concentrate on boxing.
“The Trabablas tournament is another opportunity for me to get back into action.”
Majoni won the vacant WBF Super Flyweight title last year after stopping Malawi’s Aubrey Masamba by third-round knock-out at the 7 Arts Theatre in Harare. The Trabablas tournament is promoted by former WBC Silver welterweight champion Charles Manyuchi through the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy.
