MTN rules the roost

LAGOS. – MTN Nigeria has maintained its dominance of the country’s mobile network space, according to statistics the Nigeria Communications Commission. According the NCC statistics, as at the end of the second quarter of this year, MTN maintained its subscriber base with 55,2 million active lines.

Globacom, trails by more than half with 25 million subscribers while Airtel has about 21,6 million. Etisalat is fourth with 15,3 million active lines.

The NCC report also indicated that the number of active telephone lines in the country fell by 5,6 million in July.
As of the end of June this year, the NCC said the figure was at 120,3 million, indicating a decline by 386 536 lines from the 120,7 million active lines recorded in May.

The figures for March and April were put at 117,2 million and 119,3 million respectively.
The decline was reflected across board, affecting the Global System for Mobile Telecommunication operators, Code Division Multiple Access operators and fixed/fixed wireless operators.

The number of GSM lines fell to 111,8 million in July, from 117,4 million recorded in June, while active CDMA lines fell to 2,51 million from 2,56 million in the same period. Active fixed/fixed wireless dropped to 373 871 from the 382 678 recorded in June.

According to NCC, the country’s teledensity is now 81,97 percent. This reflects a drop from 85,97 percent over the corresponding period.

The percentage of GSM, CDMA and fixed/fixed wireless lines are 97,55 percent, 2,13 percent and 0,32 percent, respectively.
Meanwhile, the industry ended 2012 with a combined subscriber base of 113,1 million, up from 95,8 million active subscriptions in January of the same year.

The NCC data, however, showed that only the GSM operators contributed to the addition in subscriber base, as the CDMA and fixed line operators recorded declines in the second quarter. – CAJ News.
