MUTARE’S Tinei Muchenje as well as Harare’s Ursula Gripper won the men’s and women’s sections of the Club Champion of Singles Champions bowling tournament that was recently held in Chegutu.

Muchenje is from Mutare Bowling Club while Gripper is based at Borrowdale Country Club in Harare and the tournament was the last on the Bowls Zimbabwe calendar for the year. However only a few players turned out for the event.

There were no players from Bulawayo due to another event that happened on the same day.

“A vastly smaller tournament than expected or wanted sadly but we had to continue for those players that wanted to play anyway,” said Bowls Zimbabwe national treasurer Kevin Robert McGeoch.

The men’s section had six participants and Muchenje emerged victorious with the most points in his two sets of nine. Muchenje finished with four points from his sets and was followed by Suri with three points. The other four participants all had two points each.

The winner of the women’s section, Gripper also won with the same number of points as her male counterpart, finishing with four points from her throws. Second placed Shelagh finished with three points, same as third placed Lorna. The women’s section also had six participants.

After the completion of the tournament, Bowls Zimbabwe has no other event on the calendar as all other activities will be centered on team selection for World Bowls in Australia next year. The team that will travel, reserves and the team manager will be announced by the end of November.

Bowls Zimbabwe is planning to send five men and same number of women to the global event that is scheduled for August 29 to September 10, 2023 in Queensland, Australia. – @brandon_malvin
