THE Husqvarna Mud Run raised US$61 000 which will be channelled towards child cancer relief programmes run by KidzCan.

Spearheaded by Grant Mitchell, KidzCan has witnessed the transformative power of community support, channelling a total of over US$400 000 towards saving lives since the start of the Mud Run in 2012.

KidzCan director, Daniel McKenzie, said the funds will go a long way in the fight against childhood cancer.

“Last Saturday’s contribution of US$61 000 is a testament to their enduring support, fuelling our mission to keep the wheels of our operations turning,” he said.

“However, the needs are many, given that we are helping every child who comes through Zimbabwe’s public health system.

“The financial burden of cancer treatment is immense, therefore, we offer all our services free of charge to our financially disadvantaged patients.

“Even for affluent families, battling cancer is a monumental task.”

McKenzie said KidzCan extends a lifeline through chemotherapy drugs, CT and MRI scans, bereavement support and vital transport allowances for patients and caregivers, ensuring seamless treatment journeys.

“Our supportive services encompass sourcing and providing prosthetics, admission and discharge packs, easing the hospital experience for our clients,” he said.

“Additionally, nutritional support via food hampers is pivotal, recognising the indispensable role of nutrition in cancer treatment.

“This year, in particular, is quite challenging due to the impact of the drought, which has worsened the situation of our patients who often come from impoverished, rural settings that are dependent on subsistence farming.”

He added that it puts increased strain on these families already reeling from the pressure of times spent in hospital looking after the kids.

“To us, this underscores the urgency of strengthening our food hamper distribution network to safeguard the already vulnerable immune systems of our children,” McKenzie said.
