Speaker of Parliament Advocate Jacob Mudenda and Parliament’s portfolio committee on Environment, Climate, Wildlife, Hospitality and Tourism have today led legislators in a clean-up campaign at Westgate shopping centre, Harare, in line with President Mnangagwa’s call to ensure a clean environment.

Legislators who have this week been busy with a pre-budget seminar at the iconic new Parliament building in Mount Hampden had to temporarily leave their oversight, legislative and representative roles to attend to the cleaning up of the environment consistent with what is envisaged in the National Development Strategy.

Several legislators said they felt duty-bound to participate in the clean-up campaign because it was a way of showing that they lead by example.

They said the clean-up was meant to restore cleanliness and hygiene as well as maintain it.

It was also a great opportunity for Adv Mudenda and legislators to engage with the Westgate Community, consistent with Parliament’s desire for it to be closer to the people.

Various stakeholders including the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) and the business community sheltered at Westgate Mall joined in the exercise.

President Mnangagwa has set aside the first Friday of each month to clean the environment before people get to their work.
