Mufakose 1 High School continues to stand out as one of Zimbabwe’s strong performing Government day schools, with a clear focus on academic excellence, especially at Advanced Level.

Headmaster David Vurayayi said the school works with clear academic targets to push performance higher each year.

“For every subject that one teaches, the target is to come up with at least 20 As,” he said.

At A-Level, the school is aiming for a 100 percent pass rate.

The results show steady progress. Last year, the school recorded a 99.2 percent A-Level pass rate from 245 candidates. The previous year, it achieved 99,24 percent.

In 2025, 44 learners scored 15 points, while 43 achieved 15 points in 2024.

More than 130 learners have scored between 13 and 15 points in recent years.

The school is also well known for its strength in science subjects. Each year, between 100 and 130 learners study sciences at A-Level.

With more than 500 learners in Forms Five and Six combined, Mufakose 1 High School is one of the largest A-Level centres in the country.

Enrolment has grown from about 1 800 learners in 2018 to around 2 600 today, supported by 98 teachers.

Parents say the school’s consistency is one of its strongest points.

School Development Committee chairperson Todd Mwayengeni said: “It’s the quality of education and the consistency in results.”

The school also balances academics with sport.

Deputy Head Garikayi Gwature said: “In terms of sport, we are acquitting ourselves very well.”

Learners compete in soccer, netball, basketball, rugby, cricket, athletics, badminton, korfball and darts.

The korfball team has travelled to Malawi, South Africa and the Netherlands.

The badminton team has competed in South Africa, and a learner is currently representing Zimbabwe in Botswana.

A special needs learner has represented Zimbabwe in Yemen, showing the school’s inclusive approach.

The school has also introduced income-generating projects to support its operations. These include a poultry project with close to 1 700 birds, producing eggs and chicks for sale.

Plans are underway to expand the project through the purchase of an incubator, while future projects such as mushroom production and crop growing are also being considered. The projects are aimed at promoting sustainability and practical skills.

With strong academic targets, near-perfect A-Level results and growing enrolment, Mufakose 1 High School continues to build a solid reputation in public education.
