Mufakose plea on increased crèche fee

The Rhodesia Herald, January 22, 1974

THE Mufakose African Advisory Board has asked Salisbury City Council to review the increased fees at children’s day-care centres, Mr Richard Phili, vice chairman of the board, said yesterday.

Mr Phili said the request was made in a resolution passed at a recent meeting of the board.

He said the board also told the African Affairs Committee that it joined parents in the township in deploring the increases in fees at the day-care centres.

He said most parents were likely to withdraw their children from the centres and employ housegirls to look after their children.

The increased fees, which range from 50 cents a child a month for parents who earn less than $30 a month to $10 for those who earn $165 or more a month, are due to take effect from the beginning of this month.

LESSONS FOR TODAY

  • Mufakose is a western high density suburb in Harare.
  • A crèche is a nursery or day care centre where babies and young children are cared for during the working day, while their mothers or carers are at work or doing something else.
  • The primary focus of a crèche is to “provide a safe and nurturing environment for the youngest children, often with a strong emphasis on early childhood development”.
  • In most suburbs in Harare, Early Childhood Development (ECD) learning centres have taken the place of crèches and they are not run by the local authority. ECD is the period from conception up to school entry.
