FRESH from winning the Mashonaland Men’s Squash Championship, Blessing Muhwati has his sights firmly set on retaining his Zimbabwe Closed Championship title this week.

The tournament starts on Friday at St John’s College in Harare, where 20-year-old Muhwati will seek to continue with a purple patch that has already seen him winning all tournaments this year.

“I have a good chance of winning the Closed Championship but it will be tough, I will have to fight for it. After winning the Mash Open it’s obvious I am the man to beat so there is no room for slackening.

“The country is blessed with some talented players and they will all be eying the title so if I go into the competition thinking everything will come on a silver platter I will be fooling myself,” said Muhwati.

The starlet won his maiden Mashonaland Men’s Squash Championship title last weekend at Highlands Sports Club in Harare after beating Marin Murray 3-1. He is determined to continue winning titles.

“I have been playing well and steady and hope to claim them all and thank God I have no injuries so far,” said Muhwati, the Old Hararians captain.

With OH on course to win the Mashonaland Squash Rackets League title, it may well be a gruelling run of games for their skipper.

“I have to be careful because there are so many matches to play. In the past I used to over-train and get burnt out, but now I am training smart and playing smarter,” said Muhwati.

Meanwhile, Murray has blamed his defeat last weekend on errors at key moments.

“My errors lost the game for me … it is a final and all the guys want to win that’s why it gets a bit tense. He (Muhwati) played a bit tighter and I started making a few more errors,” he said.
