MUKARO High re-opens today as the school authorities comply with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s directive to open the institution with immediate effect. Two weeks ago, the Roman Catholic Church-run school was closed in protest at the continued presence of two teachers accused of masterminding a 2012 pupils strike over alleged poor services and food, among other issues.
Mukaro High School headmaster Aquinas Mazhunga said the school will open today following a meeting between school authorities and Education Minister Lazarus Dokora in Harare on Thursday.
“We’ve complied with Minister Dokora’s directive and we’re opening after which pupils will start lessons. Those sitting for June examinations will write. The two teachers have been told to return as the issue will be better dealt with by the Ministry as the employer,” said Mazhunga.
Gutu West MP Tongai Muzenda, in whose constituency the school falls, hailed the Minister’s decision to order the Roman Catholic Church to immediately re-open the school saying its closure violated children’s right to education.
He said the move also short-changed parents who struggle to pay fees for their children.
“This is a noble move by our Minister. I was opposed to the closure in the first place as I felt that it violated the children’s right to education. The parents face difficulties in paying fees that it will be painful for their children to lose learning time over issues that have nothing to do with them,” said MP Muzenda.
