Mukumba wins Maswede Classic golf tournament

AMATEUR golfer, Innocent Mukumba stood up to the occasion to win the 2023 Maswede Classic golf tournament which was held at Falcon Golf Club in Harare over the weekend.

The young Mukumba recorded a five shots victory over second placed Davidson Kamwathendo.

The highly rated Mukumba carded an impressive five over par 222 total.

Mukumba led from the first round in the 54 hole three round event to go all the way and claim the top honours. In the first round of the championship, Mukumba shot one birdie for a round score of 71 before he followed it up with a two bogeys in the second round.

In round two, the Wintgate based Mukumba shot a score of 74. It was in the third and final round that Mukumba had his worst day out in the greens as he shot five birdies for a round score of 77 to complete his campaign.

Mukumba’s victory followed yet another impressive campaign during the 2023 Roland Park Open where he finished in third place.

Second placed Kamwathendo carded round scores 75, 74 and 78 for his gross total of 227 points. In third place was Raphael Jazi who had scores of 79, 74 and 79 for a gross total of 232 points while in fourth place, Shepherd Chiwaya, in fourth had a gross total of 234 points after carding three round scores of 80, 79 and 75.

This was the inaugural edition of the Mashwede Classic after it was introduced into the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) calendar at the beginning of the year. The other new event on the calendar is the Jacaranda Challenge, which was formerly known as the Varse and Bowel Championship. — @brandon_malvin
