Mumbengegwi to attend Italy-Africa conference

Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi will attend the first Italy-Africa Ministerial Conference to be held in Rome starting tomorrow.

The conference is aimed at strengthening Italy’s relations with Africa in the fields of agriculture, technology and renewable energy.

In a statement yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the “First Italy-Africa Ministerial Conference” was a continuation of the Italy-Africa Initiative launched in 2013.

The Italy-Africa initiative was aimed at refocusing Italy’s attention on Africa, which had experienced phenomenal economic growth rates over the last 10 years.

“The conference’s main objectives include broadening and deepening possible areas of cooperation with Africa, thus reaffirming Italy’s renewed attention and engagement towards Africa, identifying ways to support the African continent in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“The conference will also highlight on defining a strategic partnership in specific sectors, such as: Economic Development (infrastructure development, agriculture, Small and Medium Enterprise model in Africa); Social and Environmental (Balancing development needs with environmental sustainability) Sustainability of Migration (demographic trends and employment policies) and Peace and Security (Peace-Keeping and Peace Building in Africa),” reads the statement.

The main business of the conference will be conducted in the four thematic sessions focusing on Economic Sustainability, Socio-Environmental Sustainability, Sustainability of the Migratory Phenomenon and Peace and Security.
