Munetsi scores Wolves’ last goal of season

Marshall Munetsi’s stunning strike cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo’s 20th Premier League goal of the season as Wolves ended Brentford’s faint hopes of qualifying for Europe yesterday.

The Zimbabwean international, who had received his fair share of criticism recently for failing to convert chances, officially scored Wolves last goal of the season in that 1-1 draw.

Clear-cut openings were few and far between in the second half until Munetsi ran on to Jorgen Strand Larsen’s header and lashed a first-time strike beyond Mark Flekken and into the top corner.

The visitors needed to win, and have other results go their way, to stand any chance of finishing eighth and sneaking into Europe next season.

They took a 20th-minute lead at Molineux when Christian Norgaard picked out Mbeumo for a simple finish after Rayan Ait-Nouri had lost possession deep inside his own half.

Yoane Wissa and Keane-Lewis Potter went close to adding to Brentford’s lead, while goalkeeper Flekken was forced into saves at the other end by Matheus Cunha, Nelson Semedo and Ait-Nouri as Wolves sought a response.

Goncalo Guedes scuffed Munetsi’s cut-back off target early in the second period, but the Zimbabwean forward’s thumping 75th-minute finish salvaged a point for Vitor Pereira’s team with a quarter of an hour remaining.

Since the arrival of Munetsi mid-season, Wolves had a remarkable turn to their season, with coach Pereira giving credit to the Warriors man for the hard work that covered for other players. — BBC/ Zimpapers Sports Hub.
