THE stage is set for what promises to be a thrilling football spectacle when the inaugural Munhumutapa Challenge Cup Five-A-Side tournament bursts into life at the Fifa Football For Hope Centre in Gwabalanda today.

The ground-breaking competition, which has attracted teams from across Bulawayo and beyond, is expected to draw a huge crowd of football enthusiasts eager to witness fast-paced five-a-side action in a tournament that organisers hope will become a permanent fixture on Zimbabwe’s football calendar.

A total of seven preliminary-round fixtures will be played throughout the day, with teams battling for progression in a competition designed to promote grassroots football and provide a platform for emerging talent.

Five-A-Side national chairperson Philani Banda expressed excitement ahead of the tournament, saying all preparations had been completed for a memorable debut edition.

“We are delighted to be launching the inaugural Munhumutapa Challenge Cup. This tournament represents an important milestone for five-a-side football in Zimbabwe and we are expecting an exciting day of competitive football,” said Banda.

“The response from clubs has been overwhelming and that shows the growing popularity of the game.

“We are anticipating a large crowd at the Fifa Football For Hope Centre because football lovers want to be part of history and witness the birth of what we believe will become one of the country’s premier five-a-side competitions.”

Banda said the tournament was not only about competition but also about talent identification and community engagement.

“Our objective is to create opportunities for players to showcase their abilities while bringing communities together through football. We encourage families, supporters and football fans to come in their numbers and enjoy the entertainment that will be on offer throughout the day,” he said.

Action will get underway at 9am with Nedbank FC taking on Young Stars before a series of matches featuring Go-Boyz FC, Fox FC, Mictech Stars, Nust FC, Southwonder FC, FC Millennium, TNS Rovers, Academic Stars, Amabhubesi FC, Elite Institute, SOBUS’A and GD5 FC.

Tournament organisers have also reminded participating teams that all players must produce valid futsal licences bearing the Zifa logo, with unlicensed players set to be barred from taking part.

With anticipation building across the city, today’s event is expected to provide a carnival atmosphere at the Fifa Football For Hope Centre as Bulawayo welcomes a new chapter in the growth of five-a-side football. — @FungaiMuderere.
