THE waiting is finally over.
Months after its high-profile launch and a draw that paired Zimbabwe’s football powerhouses with ambitious lower division clubs, the inaugural Munhumutapa Challenge Cup gets down to business this afternoon as the Round of 32 unfolds across the country.
The competition has injected fresh excitement into the domestic game, reviving the romance of knockout football where reputations count for little once the referee blows the first whistle. It is a stage where giants can stumble, unknown players can become household names and clubs from the lower divisions can write themselves into Zimbabwean football folklore.
With a record-breaking sponsorship package and a winner’s cheque that has captured the imagination of clubs across the country, every team enters the weekend knowing that one victory could transform its campaign.
Among the ties attracting the most attention is tomorrow’s clash between Highlanders and Southern Region Division One side Blackrock at Colliery Stadium in Hwange.
On paper, the Bulawayo giants are overwhelming favourites. They boast greater experience, a squad packed with Premier Soccer League quality and a rich history of competing for major honours.
Yet knockout football has never been played on paper, something Blackrock are hoping to remind everyone.
For the Hwange-based side, the encounter is far more than just another fixture. It is the biggest match in the club’s history and an opportunity to measure themselves against one of the country’s most successful and best-supported teams.
Blackrock coach Tinashe Doriro says his players have embraced the occasion and are determined to enjoy every minute of it.
“The boys are very excited. They’re enjoying the moment, the media experience, the preparation of a big game and how the fans are proud of them. To them it’s a win even before the game. We are training very well, today and tomorrow we will be polishing up,” said Doriro.
While many will expect Highlanders to progress comfortably, Doriro believes his side has every chance of producing one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.
“I do sense that a positive result can come if we approach the game as another fixture, without giving too much respect to Highlanders.”
His confidence stems from the character his team has shown throughout the season. Blackrock have built a reputation as one of the Southern Region Soccer League’s most resilient outfits, regularly producing strong second-half displays to grind out results.
Midfielder Thobani Ncube has provided leadership and stability in the middle of the park, while Ghanaian striker Emmanuel Aduakye and leading scorer Tafadzwa Chibatamoto have carried much of the attacking responsibility with crucial goals.
Another player who will have plenty of motivation is Lloyd Mutoma. The gifted 22-year-old returns to face Highlanders at the same venue where, as an 18-year-old, he announced himself with a memorable goal against Bosso in 2023 while in Hwange colours. After injury setbacks and spells elsewhere, Mutoma has rediscovered his confidence at Blackrock and will be eager to produce another memorable performance.
Highlanders, however, understand the dangers of underestimating lower division opposition. Coach Benjani Mwaruwari has repeatedly emphasised professionalism throughout the season and will demand total focus from his players.
With influential figures such as captain Darlington Munkuli, Mongameli Tshuma, Kudakwashe Mahachi, Andrew Mbeba and goalkeeper Aaron Ngwenya expected to play leading roles, Bosso know they cannot afford any lapses in concentration against an opponent with nothing to lose.
Colliery Stadium will also stage another potential blockbuster this weekend when Dynamos face former Premier Soccer League side Hwange this afternoon, turning the mining town into the centre of Zimbabwean football over two days.
The fixture programme means thousands of supporters are expected to descend on Hwange to witness two of the country’s biggest clubs begin their quest for Munhumutapa Challenge Cup glory.
Away from Hwange, the Round of 32 has thrown up several intriguing contests.
League champions Scottland begin their campaign away to FC Oden, while FC Platinum travel to Marere FC hoping to avoid becoming another cup casualty.
Simba Bhora host fellow Premiership side Manica Diamonds in one of the toughest all-top-flight clashes of the round, while Chicken Inn entertain Ngezi Platinum Stars in a fixture that promises intensity between two well-drilled sides.
Herentals visit MWOS, Bulawayo Chiefs welcome Agama FC, TelOne host Blanket Mine, ZPC Kariba take on Triangle United and Norton Big Boys face FC Hunters as clubs from different levels of Zimbabwean football battle for places in the last 16.
That diversity is precisely what makes the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup special. It brings together established giants, ambitious Premiership clubs and fearless lower division sides under one competition, giving every team a genuine opportunity to dream.
For the smaller clubs, it is a chance to test themselves against the country’s elite and showcase their talent before bigger audiences. For the giants, it is a reminder that history offers no guarantees in knockout football.
By the end of the weekend, half of the remaining teams will have seen their dreams shattered. The survivors, however, will move one step closer to lifting what is already shaping up to become one of the most coveted trophies in Zimbabwean football.
And if cup competitions around the world have taught football anything, it is the fact that an underdog can write history.
