ZIFA Eastern Region Women Soccer Division One side, Getty Queens, who will entertain Southern Region’s Las Palmas at Mutare Showgrounds tomorrow, Saturday, are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to advance to the next stage of the prestigious Munhumutapa Cup.
The competition is now in the Round of 32.
Following tomorrow’s fixture, Mutare City Queens will also face Northern Region Division One side, Harare City Queens at Mutare Showgrounds on Sunday.
Getty Queens secretary general, Dambudzo August, confirmed that admission will be free.
“We are now in the Round of 32 of the Munhumutapa Cup. We are glad to be one of the teams that will be representing Manicaland Province in this prestigious competition. We really want to urge everyone who follows the game of football and all those who would want to have a family time out to come to the Showgrounds where we will be playing against Las Palmas from the Southern Region. Entry will be free,” he said.
August said Getty Queens was formed to occupy the girl child and steer them away from drug and substance abuse.
“Honourable Gertrude Mutandi is the brains behind the formation of Getty Queens Football Club. This is a project that is meant to help occupy the girl child as well as showcase their talents for a possible better future through sport. The aim is also to play a part in the fight against drug and substance abuse, especially among the girl children. Sport can be an avenue to make these young girls desist from self-destructive habits such as drug and substance abuse,” he said.
Popular Mutare football supporter, Malvin ‘Chibaba’ Makarawu, urged fans to turn out in their numbers.
“We are spreading the message that the people of Mutare need to come to the Showgrounds in their numbers and create an intimidating atmosphere for the visiting side. Remember these two women soccer teams — Getty Queens and Mutare City Rovers Queens — are the only remaining teams in this competition from lower divisions, hence they deserve our support,” he said.
Mutare City Council general manager for elite teams, Johannes Kwangwari, said they are targeting progression in the tournament.
“We are very serious about our participation in the Munhumutapa Cup, and we will give it our best shot. We are looking at nothing short of progressing to the next stage of the competition and we have made more than enough preparations for that,” he said.
