THE Munhumutapa Challenge Cup Round of 16 reaches its climax today with three intriguing encounters lined up across the country, as clubs battle for a place in the quarter-finals of the inaugural competition.
The spotlight will be firmly on Rufaro Stadium, where CAPS United welcome Manica Diamonds in one of the weekend’s biggest clashes.
The Green Machine will now face a Manica Diamonds side that showed plenty of character to eliminate fellow Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfit Simba Bhora on penalties.
CAPS United will therefore start with confidence, but Manica Diamonds have already demonstrated that they cannot be written off in knockout football.
For Manica Diamonds, the competition offers an opportunity to inject some excitement into a difficult league campaign.
Cup football demands a different mentality, with the possibility of penalties adding another layer of pressure.
At Gibbo Stadium, Triangle United will host giant-killers Blanket Mine FC, who have already shown they have no fear of top-flight opposition.
Blanket Mine stunned PSL side TelOne in the previous round, winning on penalties after a 1-1 draw, while Triangle United secured their last-16 berth with a convincing 3-0 win over ZPC Kariba.
The third tie takes place at Luveve Stadium, where Jordan FC face Kelvin Kaindu-mentored Hardrock FC.
Jordan earned their place in the last 16 after another impressive giant-killing display, while Hardrock also progressed from the previous round, setting up an encounter that could provide another upset.
The Munhumutapa Cup has already lived up to its reputation as a competition where reputations count for little. Highlanders and Dynamos were among the major casualties in the Round of 32, with Blackrock eliminating Bosso on penalties and Hwange knocking out Dynamos.
That unpredictability has given the Round of 16 an added edge.
