ZKS Spinners Arena in Bulawayo will today join the rest of the country in commemorating the inaugural Munhumutapa Day, a public holiday set aside to celebrate Zimbabwe’s rich history, heritage and identity.
The celebrations coincide with the country marking His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s 84th birthday, with the occasion expected to combine entertainment and cultural expression while encouraging Zimbabweans, particularly young people, to appreciate the nation’s historical legacy.
Munhumutapa Day, observed on September 15, recognises the historical significance of the Munhumutapa State, which played a pivotal role in the development of Zimbabwean civilisation.
Speaking ahead of the celebrations, ZKS Spinners Arena spokesperson Philani Tshuma said the day presents an opportunity for Zimbabweans to reflect on their roots and appreciate the country’s heritage.
“Munhumutapa Day is more than just another holiday. It is a reminder of who we are, where we come from and the rich history that shaped our identity as Zimbabweans. For us at ZKS, celebrating this day is about creating a space where people, especially youths, can enjoy themselves while also appreciating their history and culture.
“Our youth are the custodians of our heritage going forward, so they need to know and understand the stories, traditions and achievements of those who came before them. If we do not teach our history to the younger generation, we risk losing an important part of our identity,” said Tshuma.
He said entertainment had an important role to play in helping young people connect with Zimbabwe’s history and culture.
“Music and entertainment have a powerful way of bringing people together. Hence, we want to use this platform to make history relevant and relatable to young people. They can enjoy themselves
while at the same time understanding why Munhumutapa Day matters,” he said.
Tshuma said those attending the event should brace themselves for thrilling adrenaline-fuelled performances from a host of spinners, including The Rock, Mastanda, Ben AK47, Sbahle, Bhova, King Fly and Team Ghost, among others.
As the arena prepares to welcome revellers, Tshuma urged members of the public to exercise caution and adhere to all safety regulations.
“We want to encourage everyone coming to the arena to exercise extra caution and to respect the safety measures that have been put in place. The barricades are there for a reason and spectators are not allowed to cross them at any time.
“The barricades provide a solid shield between the spinners and revellers. Once a spectator crosses into the restricted area, they are putting themselves and others at risk, especially because the spinners need enough space to operate safely,” he said.
Tshuma said the arena had also erected safety signage in line with the Zimbabwe Spinners Association (ZISA) constitution to guide both drivers and spectators.
“We have also put in place signage around the arena in line with the ZISA constitution. These signs are there to guide both drivers and revellers on what is expected of them. We urge everyone to follow the signs because safety is a shared responsibility,” he said.
