Municipal cops throw spikes at omnibus

The accident occurred at around 8:50am near the intersection of Harare Street and Abercorn Street.

Angered by the incident, members of the public reportedly attacked the municipal officers accusing them of causing the accident.
According to eyewitnesses, the commuter omnibus driver, reversed his car with speed and hit a pavement slab resulting in the vehicle overturning.

The eyewitnesses said a mob gathered and beat up the municipal police officers and damaged a municipal police vehicle.
The injured were taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

National police spokesperson chief superintendent Paul Nyathi warned kombi drivers not to put the lives of passengers in danger by running away from police and municipal police.
He said the kombi driver tried to speed off from municipal officers who had spikes and he reversed resulting in the kombi hitting another car and it overturned.

“The mob then beat up the municipal officers and damaged their vehicle. During the process a member of the Defence Forces tried to intervene and had his vehicle stoned,” Chief Supt Nyathi said.

Police later intervened and rescued the officers.
Chief Supt Nyathi appealed to kombi operators to abide by the law.

He said they had since engaged the operators, council and other stakeholders with a view of finding a lasting solution to the problems of congestion in the CBD.
“We are encouraging the stakeholders to play their role and this also includes kombi drivers to comply with the law,” he said.
