A murder suspect from Seke, who allegedly teamed up with his four brothers to murder their uncle accusing him of possessing goblins, was yesterday jailed for three years for torching the now deceased’s three huts.
The property consumed by the fire included clothes, food, kitchen utensils and furniture all valued at $640.
David Mahungo (28) of Chamunorwa Village, Chief Seke is facing murder charges for teaming up with his siblings to murder their uncle Musekiwa (83).
Mahungo was slapped with a five-year jail term after pleading guilty to malicious damage to property charges when he appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo.
Mr Murendo suspended a year of his sentence for five years while another was suspended on condition he pays back the money by January 30 next year.
In handing sentence, Mr Murendo took into account that it was the court’s duties to protect citizens from people of Mahungo’s wayward behaviour.
The prosecutor Mr Tatenda Mukatera told the court that on November 23 and at around 7pm at Chamunorwa Village, Mahungo accused his uncle of possessing goblins, which was troubling the whole family.
The court heard that Mahungo and the rest of his family members convened a meeting to resolve the issue, leading Musekiwa to go into hiding in a nearby bush.
This angered Mahungo and in a fit of rage, he went on to set ablaze his uncle’s three huts.
Property worth $640 was reduced to ashes and the matter was reported to the police leading to his arrest.
