THE late Lesedi Nkomo, who was recently shot dead by her ex-husband, Godknows Muleya, was buried at Luveve Cemetery in Bulawayo yesterday.
Mourners, including community members, relatives, church members from various denominations and friends, turned out in large numbers at her family home in Pumula South suburb to bid her farewell.
One of Lesedi’s closest friends, Ms Tholakele Sibanda, described her as a humble and loving person who was always willing to help others.
“She was a humble person and very lovely. Anyone who needed advice or financial assistance could approach her for help. She has left a big void, and our stay at school will never be the same,” said Ms Sibanda.
A family member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Lesedi and Muleya had a troubled relationship that eventually led to her being returned to her parents.
“Their relationship had grown sour. At the height of it, Muleya and his emissaries had to bring her back to her parents,” said the family member.
The relative said the family subsequently refunded Muleya the US$700 he had paid as ukangaziwe, a customary payment associated with the formalisation of a marriage.
“We had to give him (Muleya) back his money, US$700, for ukangaziwe,” said the family member.
The relative also dismissed claims circulating on social media that Muleya had been paying Lesedi’s university fees, insisting that her parents were responsible for her education.
“Lesedi’s parents are the ones who were paying her school fees, not the false information that is being peddled on social media,” said the relative.
The family further revealed that it had WhatsApp conversations which, it said, showed that Lesedi no longer wanted to reconcile with Muleya.
“We have WhatsApp chats proving that Lesedi was no longer in love, but Muleya persisted in nagging her for a reunion, but Lesedi refused,” said the relative.
Lesedi was studying for an Honours degree in Psychology at Midlands State University (MSU) and was in the final stages of her programme.
Meanwhile, Muleya is expected to be buried at his rural home in Beitbridge, Matabeleland South, this week after reportedly taking his own life.
