Murewa police officer accused of leaking state secrets amid controversy over constitutional rights

Sunday News Reporter

Gerald Matewa, a police officer stationed at the Murewa district headquarters, is facing serious allegations of leaking state secrets to opposition parties, a charge that could violate his oath of office. Sources within the police force revealed that Superintendent Masvivi, Matewa’s superior, informed him that he was being sought for allegedly disclosing vital information to opposition groups.

However, fellow officers suggest that the accusations may be politically motivated. According to several colleagues who spoke on condition of anonymity, they believe Matewa is being targeted due to his firm stance on his constitutional rights. “Gerald has always been vocal about what he believes is right,” one officer stated. “He refused to cast his postal vote in front of his superiors before the harmonized elections, arguing that it was against his constitutional rights.”

The controversy surrounding Matewa escalated further on August 23, the day of the elections, when he was stationed at the Culture House polling station. During this time, he reportedly had a heated altercation with a member of Forever Associates Zimbabwe, a group known for its close ties to the ruling Zanu-PF party. Witnesses to the incident recounted that Matewa clashed again with Superintendent Masvivi, who warned him that he was “getting too big for his shoes.”

“Gerald stood his ground during the altercation, which did not sit well with some of the higher-ups,” one officer explained. “It’s not uncommon for officers to feel the pressure of political affiliations within the force, and Matewa’s refusal to conform may have put him in the crosshairs.”

The allegations against Matewa have sparked a debate within the police ranks about the balance between duty and constitutional rights. Many officers have rallied behind Matewa, asserting that his commitment to upholding his rights should not be grounds for persecution. “We should be able to voice our concerns and stand up for our rights without fear,” another colleague remarked. “Gerald is just one example of what many of us feel in silence.”

As investigations into the allegations continue, the Murewa police community remains divided, with many calling for transparency and fairness in the handling of Matewa’s case. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions within the police force, particularly in a politically charged environment leading up to the recent elections.
