Museum holds kids workshop on SDGs

THE Natural History Museum in Bulawayo in partnership with Reach A Young Soul Trust (RAYS) has intensified efforts to raise awareness aimed at making young people appreciate Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SDGs are a global agenda, adopted by countries in 2015, with a vision of ending poverty, protecting the planet and ensuring that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

Through its heritage education department, the country’s premier cultural and natural history institution held a four-day workshop last week to enlighten children between the ages of seven and 14 years on what SDGs are all about.

The museum’s entomologist Miss Dorothy Madamba said the theme centred on SDGs because they were are all about achieving a better environment and also trying to curb the effects of climate change.

Miss Madamba said they also looked at raising awareness of food security, climate change, recycling, waste management and green fuels.

“We taught them through Powerpoint presentations and activities since we did not want to bore the children. After learning about a certain topic they did activities that were in line with that certain topic to help them participate and have fun at the same time.

“It is our collective responsibility to support them and, ultimately, the well-being of our planet,” said Miss Madamba. —Mollet Ndebele
