WAKISO. — President Yoweri Museveni has been duly nominated to contest for President in the 2016 general elections. Museveni the NRM flag-bearer was presented to the Electoral Commission (EC) by the Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda and was seconded by state minister for youth Evelyn Anite.
Museveni was accompanied by his wife Janet Museveni among other NRM bigwigs. Immediately after he had been nominated, Museveni addressed the Press and promised that if voted back to power he would concentrate on ensuring Uganda takes off.
“The past recent years have been years of building the foundation.
“We have gone through three stages so far which include liberation, recovery and foundation and what is next is to take off,” Museveni said.
Asked what new thing he has to offer to Ugandans after 30 years in power, Museveni said: “We have achieved so much so far. There are many things we had deliberately prioritised to lay a good foundation.
“For instance, we have been allocating roads 3 000 billion shillings every year and NAADS has been getting about 200 billion shillings. In the next term, we shall prioritise agriculture, water for production and fighting poverty.”
On Sunday, when 15 000 party delegates unanimously endorsed his candidature, he said, “I thank you for having chosen to push Uganda and our party forward with your continued trust in me.”
Other aspirants who await nomination include; Abed Bwanika, C Baale, Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, Dr. Kiiza Besigye, Amama Mbabazi, BRM Biraaro, Joseph Mabirizi, Nasser Ssebagala and Faith Walube Kyalya.
Observers argue that the next year’s elections slated for February or March will be the most contested elections in the country, as Museveni faces strong and stiff competition from Mbabazi who has been his close ally for over four decades.
Mbabazi, a seasoned lawyer who was fired by Museveni in September last year as Prime Minister, served in various cabinet, government positions and intelligence circles. — Xinhua.
