YOUNG Bulawayo-bred cueist is continuing to make his mark in international pool, with the talented player set to carry Zimbabwe’s hopes at the prestigious WPA Heyball World Championships in Pune, India.
The rising star will be among the world’s leading heyball players competing at the global showpiece from August 12 to 15, in what promises to be another major milestone in his blossoming career.
Mushobe’s selection has been welcomed by the local pool fraternity, with Zimbabwe Pool Association (Zipa) public relations officer Donald Wadawu hailing the youngster’s achievement and wishing him well on the international stage.
“We are very proud of Richard and what he has achieved at such a young age. He is a product of Bulawayo and his progress is a source of pride for the city and Zimbabwe as a whole,” said Wadawu.
“Representing Zimbabwe at the WPA World Championships is a big achievement and we wish him all the best. We believe he has what it takes to compete at that level and make his country proud.”
For Mushobe, the trip to Pune represents the reward for a journey that has seen him steadily rise through Zimbabwe’s competitive pool ranks.
Bred in Bulawayo, the youngster has continued to develop his game and build a reputation as one of the country’s promising young cueists.
Now he faces perhaps his biggest challenge yet, going toe-to-toe with the world’s best.
The WPA Heyball World Championships will bring together a star-studded international field, with action taking place across 16 tables and being broadcast live to a global audience.
The tournament provides Mushobe with a priceless opportunity not only to compete for honours, but also to gain experience against players operating at the highest level of the sport.
For Zimbabwean pool, his participation is another welcome sign of the country’s growing presence on the international heyball scene.
And for Bulawayo, there is an added sense of pride as one of its own takes his cue to India carrying the national flag.
Wadawu believes Mushobe’s participation can inspire other young players who dream of making it beyond the local pool halls.
“This is also an inspiration to other young players. Richard’s journey shows that with hard work, commitment and the right attitude, you can come from Bulawayo and compete on the world stage,” he said.
Mushobe will now look to repay that faith when the tournament gets underway tomorrow.
From Bulawayo to Pune, the young cueist has already travelled a long way.
Now comes the biggest test, and the chance to show the world what Zimbabwean pool talent can do.
