Mushore, Shaba win Zim Open chess tourney

EMARALD Mushore and Linda Dalitso Shaba were crowned the 2021 Minerva Zimbabwe Open chess tournament champions at a tournament recently held at Joina City.

Mushore of Harare said he was happy to have won the men’s event and is looking forward to competing in the same tournament next year.

“I am very happy to have managed to win the tournament and it was a tough challenge for us.

”We are happy that the federation has managed to host such a big event that gives us something. I am delighted that I managed to beat several top players who have done so well in the sport,” said Mushore.

Pre-tournament favourite Spencer Masango, who recently won the Botswana Open, finished third behind second-placed Roy Mwadzura.

For his efforts Mushore pocketed US$1 000 with Mwadzura taking home US$550. Masango won US$500.

The tournament finished on Tuesday evening at Joina City in the capital.

The men’s section had eight rounds.

Mushore was the pacesetter on five points during round six followed by Tapiwa Jele, who was on 4,5 points, while Masango and Vitalis Mapuranga were all on four points.

In the women’s section, Shaba managed to recover and win the section that had US$800 for the first prize. Christine Makwena and Kudzanai Charinda came second and third respectively.

The Under-20 women’s section was won by Edith Muyambiri while Blessing Moyo won the men’s Under-20 title.

Brian Takawira took home the over-50 years title, beating Zimbabwe Chess Federation president Collen Tongowona into second place.
