Veteran gospel musician Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave has revealed that she now considers music a hobby rather than a full-time career, citing the industry’s toxic environment for women.

In an emotional Facebook post, the Makomborero hit-maker reflected on her two-decade journey in the music industry and why she decided to step back from the limelight.
“I promise you, chipo ndochisingafe manje. I’ve been there, done that, and achieved everything I needed to achieve with music. I simply shifted my focus to better things, building other safe careers,” she wrote.

Fungisai, who has been a household name for over 25 years, did not mince her words about the harsh realities faced by women in showbiz.
“Music is a toxic exposure for women. It’s an environment where women are judged, insulted, controlled, and ridiculed without cause.”

Despite her reservations, the award-winning singer still intends to mentor young artistes while keeping music as a pastime.
“I found it fulfilling to pass the baton, maintain music as a hobby, and become the qualified social worker I am today. Wait, I will be a Justice or Advocate soon because the gift is multifaceted. It excels in everything I put my mind to. It’s a rare blessing that, 25 years later, I can still do this like I did as a little girl.”

The gospel star has been diversifying her career in recent years, venturing into social work and legal studies while balancing her passion for music with her growing interest in empowering others.
