The seventh edition of the Italian Jazz Festival, now rebranded MUSICA 2014, begins in Harare tomorrow with local and international artistes sharing the stage alongside seminars and workshops for young and upcoming artistes.
The week-long festival, which is an annual event, will take place at various venues in the capital including the Italian Club, Embassy of Italy, Zimbabwe German Society, Book Cafe, Misty’s, Megga 2, 7 Arts Theatre, and Sam Levy’s Village.

The Battle of the Schools Bands is one of the highlights of the festival that will see the schools vying for top honours as they showcase their musical talents at the Italian Club.

On Wednesday next week local and international artistes will mentor young and emerging artistes as well as musical students at the College of Music from 10am-12pm on the finer points of music.

They will share their musical knowledge and skills on specific instruments and voice coaching. The workshops allows for an exchange of tips on music skills performance and vocal improvisation.

Targeted participants to the workshop include high school students and emerging artistes from the local choral scene. The culture exchange programme places a great emphasis on artistic interaction.

All the students who would have attended the workshops will next Friday give a small performance to showcase what they have learnt during the week at the College of Music.

MUSICA Festival is not just about entertainment, it is also an opportunity to develop the artistes’ skills both from a creative and a professional perspective. International artistes will also have opportunities to share ideas and learn from local artistes.

The festival is put together by the Italian Embassy in Harare with the support of various corporates to promote and sustain the cultural diversity among nations.
