Several musicians joined Peter Moyo over the weekend to honour his late father Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo in commemorations that were held in Harare and Chinhoyi.
The commemorations started on Thursday at Dandaro Inn with musicians Seh Calaz and Herbert Majeke performing with Peter. Fans came to support the musicians in remembering Dhewa who died four years ago.
On Friday the event was held in Highfield at Mushandirapamwe Hotel with several musicians taking to the stage to salute Dhewa. On Saturday Ricky Fire and Romeo Gasa joined Peter in Chinhoyi for a show at CSC Club. The main event was on Sunday at Jongwe Corner where several musicians came for the show with Prayzah, Jean Masters and Kinnah performing.
Jean Masters did a renditions of other musicians’ hits while Kinnah performed his hits before paving way for Jah Prayzah who thrilled fans with a good performance. Soul Jah Love who was not part of the advertised musicians joined Jah Prayzah on stage leaving fans crying for more.
Moyo thanked fellow musicians and fans for their support.
“It is encouraging to see that people have faith in me and Utakataka Express. People have proved to me that they love the brand,” he said.
He said they were working hard to make sure that the legacy of the musician lives on.
“As a band we are working hard to keep his legacy alive. People might see it in a different way but we are fighting to keep it alive,” said Peter.
Dhewa succumbed to cancer on October 15, 2011 at St Anne’s Hospital in Harare.
He was a hero for many music fans and there was chaos in Harare when his coffin was paraded around the city for people to pay their last respects to the icon.
His body was taken to his hometown in Kwekwe where thousands attended the funeral before hundreds made way to his rural home in Zhombe where he was buried.
His hits include “Mudzimu Weshiri”, “Chubvu”, “Samanyemba”, “Muchina Muhombe” and “Ndazvimba Mapapu”.
