A number of artists are tomorrow expected to visit Tokwe Mukosi flood victims.
Organisers of the tour Lawrence Chinoperekwei of Divine Assignments said a number of artists including Oliver Mtukudzi, Leonard Zhakata, Pastor Charamba,Winky D, Peter Moyo among others had confirmed their participation.
“Artists have shown their commitment to work with us to join the nation in encouraging each and every Zimbabwean to donate what they have to Tokwe Mukosi,” said Chinoperekwi.
He said there were plans to include Mutare based musician Blessing Shumba.
“We would want to go with all artists but we have decided to talk to a few and we are talking to Shumba to be part of the outrage so that he takes the gospel to Manicaland and Moyo to Midlands,” said Chinoperekwi.
The artistes would leave Harare tomorrow morning and spend the day with the displaced villagers to get an appreciation of the situation.
He said the tour would be part of their plans to hold a fundraising show for the victims at the City Sports Centre in Harare on May 10.
“Artistes are the mirror of society and we feel it is important for them to make the tour so that when they participate in the event it will be in the context of the crisis.”
Artists who spoke to this paper expressed their willingness to go and see what is on the ground.
Moyo said as a young artist there was need to show solidarity with the families in Tokwe Mukosi.
“If a disaster comes we have to assist them and we are calling on all Zimbabweans to donate the little they have to the victims,” said Moyo.
He added that they have already lined up shows in Masvingo and Beitbridge were they will donate a small percentage to the victims.
Zhakata called on all artists to participate in assisting the victims though they might not go on the ground.
“All artists might not go there but we still have to assist these people and that is what God tells people,” said Zhakata.
