Local musicians have urged university students to take education seriously and desist from criminal and nefarious activities.
The musicians who include Baba Mechanic Manyeruke, Jah Prayzah and Stunner said this during the recent opening of a state-of-the-art boarding facility—The Brooke—in Mandara.
The event was also graced by the Zimbabwe National Army band.
The facility was opened by local businesswoman Nyaradzo Ngara (28) and has an upmarket accommodation and boarding facility for several University of Zimbabwe students and it incorporates study rooms, exercise and entertainment facilities.
During the official opening, several musicians performed and talked to the students about the importance of education with some of them saying if they had got an opportunity, they would have continued with education rather than venturing into music since the industry was not paying enough.
Baba Manyeruke said, “You should take education seriously and make sure that you are going to school for a purpose.”
He urged female students to ensure that they would get married after achieving their goals.
“Long back ladies used to get married when they were aged between 26 and 30. But nowadays it’s different as most of them as getting married at tender ages,” Baba Manyeruke said.
Stunner said students should not lead lives they would later regret.
“Don’t ever lead a life that you will regret in future. Take education seriously and you should strive hard to achieve your goals,” he said.
Jah Prayzah said it is important that the students do not jeopardise their future because of material things. He urged female students to work for their future and avoid being swayed by older men that prey on students that are sometimes easy prey because of hard college life.
Nyaradzo built and furnished the Mandara boardroom that has dozens of UZ students who she said were equipped with all they could need to prepare themselves for their studies.
The initiative comes as UZ students over the years had struggled to get decent accommodation as they were charged exorbitant rentals in the nearby Mount Pleasant residential suburb.
This has forced many to squat culminating in at least as eight to 20 students sharing a room.
Speaking at the official launch of the hostels, Ngara said the facility was an alternative for struggling UZ students who were finding it hard to look for accommodation.
“I have made also arrangements for extra tutorials for students who reside at The Brooke to make sure they are assisted by people who have succeeded in life especially in the faculties that they are in. This shows how much education and success is valued at The Brooke,” Ngara said.
She said there were strict rules like in any other home that the students were supposed to adhere to while there was also security during the day and night.
The businesswoman also provides student with transport to and from the university campus.
