UNIVERSITY of Zimbabwe’s Leona Musikavanhu put up a good show in the Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association athletics championships when she scooped four gold medals to help her team retain their title on Saturday.The championships were held at the National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo and UZ lived up to expectations as they amassed 24 medals including 14 gold, five silver and five bronze.
Musikavanhu weighed in with four gold medals in the 100m, 200m, 400m and the 4x100m events. UZ sports director, Life Chemhere, was a happy man.
“We did very well, we retained our pole position but this time around with more gold medals. This should be the third time in a row which, to us, is an achievement but the competition was very good.
“It was a competition with a difference because the excitement and zeal to participate was just awesome. The quality of the athletes was very high and in terms of organisation we are still learning and we really want to thank Nust for organising a good show,” said Chemhere.
For their efforts UZ walked away with a floating trophy courtesy of Old Mutual.
Midlands State University were seccond with seven gold, two silver and five bronze while Great Zimbabwe came third with two gold, eight silver and one bronze.
They were followed by Nust with eight medals including two gold while Bindura University of Science Education were fifth with nine medals including one gold.
Lupane State University came sixth with seven medals and they were followed by Harare Institute of Technology with five medals while Africa University were eighth with four medals. Chinhoyi University of Technology had four medals to settle for ninth place.
Catholic University and Women’s University in Africa failed to get any medals as they both found the going tough. ZUSA president, Liberty Maidza said they picked their team for the ZITISU Games to be held in June.
