Harare Bureau
FORMER Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara has been taken to court for failing to pay for furniture worth $87,556 70 he bought on credit in 2012 from a local furniture shop. He is being sued by TN Harlequin Luxure Limited for failing to settle the debt. Yesterday TN Harlequin’s lawyers Mtetwa and Nyambirai issued summons against Prof Mutambara arguing he has refused or failed to pay for the furniture.

The furniture shop wants the former DPM to settle the debt with interest calculated from the date of issuance of summons to the date of payment, in full.

According to the summons, on different dates in 2012, Prof Mutambara entered into purchase agreements with TN Harlequin where he ordered furniture (not specified in the papers) that was delivered to House Number 21 Steppes Road Ballantyne Park, Borrowdale.

It is the plaintiff’s contention that on all the occasions when furniture was delivered, it was at the request of Prof Mutambara.
The purchase agreement shows that Prof Mutambara was supposed to settle the debt and ancillary charges in monthly instalments.

He has failed to make payments prompting TN Harlequin to approach the High Court.
TN Harlequin unsuccessfully claimed the outstanding money from Prof Mutambara forcing it to take the legal route.

Prof Mutambara is yet to file his response to the claim.
He ceased to be DPM when the coalition government made up of Zanu-PF, MDC-T and MDC formations was dissolved mid last year, paving the way for harmonised elections won resoundingly by Zanu-PF last year.

Prof Mutambara has not been politically active since then. He is, however, contesting the leadership of the MDC in the courts after he was ousted at congress when Professor Welshman Ncube took over.
