MUTARE City Council has completed the long-outstanding repair works on the Gimboki wastewater treatment plant sewer trunkline, ending months of raw sewage discharge into surrounding environments and residential areas.
The collapsed trunkline had generated significant public health and environmental concerns across Gimboki and adjacent suburbs.
Residents previously raised alarms over persistent sewer overflows, foul odours, and the heightened risk of waterborne illnesses such as cholera and typhoid.
Mutare City Council spokesperson, Mr Charles Sadondo, confirmed the completion of the project, commending the execution by the municipality’s engineering department.
“We are pleased to announce that our engineering team has successfully attended to and repaired the Gimboki sewer trunkline, which had been outstanding for a very long time. The leakage has now been completely stopped,” said Mr Sadondo.
Municipal engineering teams remain deployed on the ground to monitor affected zones, verify system functionality, and prevent potential recurrences.
“As a city, we remain very serious about environmental protection. We will continue to do our best with the available resources to ensure that the environment is free from harmful practices,” said Mr Sadondo.
During the prolonged outage, community members reported severe daily disruptions. Households noted that children were unable to play outdoors safely, while others expressed concern over the potential contamination of shallow groundwater wells.
The local authority commended residents for their patience and proactive reporting during the breakdown, emphasising that public cooperation remains essential for effective municipal service delivery.
“We want to appreciate members of the public for being patient and for reporting the issue. We urge them to continue doing so,” said Mr Sadondo.
Moving forward, the municipality said it will continue prioritising sewer reticulation upgrades and infrastructure rehabilitation across Mutare to strengthen local sanitation systems and maintain public health standards.
