Biblically, the love of money is said to be the root of all evil and this proves true considering the decay in modern day society. Relationships are the hardest hit with money being on top list when people are choosing life partners.
Prominent Mutare songstress, Memory Madekurozva provokes discussion on the issue in her recently released single “Mitima Wako” (Your heart).
Employing a fusion of afro and pasada music that is originally from Mozambique, the songstress declares she chooses love over money through the lyrics.
Madekurozva who is popular for performing cover songs of the likes of Zahara, Oliver Mtukudzi and the late Miriam Makeba in the Eastern Highlands is creating her own path with the debut single.
“I am saddened by what’s happening as people especially women are choosing spouses based on their financial status.
“We all want security and men who are able to take care of our needs and at times we compromise love.
“But then, when the money is gone what’s next?
“That is the reason why I say I choose love,” she said.
The 32-year-old singer is amongst the new breed of musicians that are venturing into afro fusion.
Her genre encompasses what she calls Manyika reggae, jazz and traditional music.
“The song is taken off my upcoming six track album due for release next year.
While my target audience is the mature crowd “Mutima Wako” is also for those who like to dance.
The rest of the songs talk about what I see happening in our society,” she said.
While she is testing the waters with the single, she is optimistic about succeeding as she brings something unique on the market.
A follow up video to “Mutima Wako” will be made available in different parts of the country soon.
