Mutoko Rural District Council (MRDC) has embarked on a massive housing scheme, solar electrification project, as well as water and sanitation upgrade that are expected to benefit thousands of residents by year end.
The council’s chief executive, Mr Peter Sigauke, confirmed the development saying they had completed the first phase of the project.
“Phase one of Mutoko solar project is now operational and feeding 10 megawatts into the national grid,” he said. “We are now awaiting the second phase to start soon, which will add an additional 10 mega- watts.
“On housing development, we initially started with a scheme for 1 500 medium- and 500 low-density residential stands. We are now providing 500 low- and 800 medium-density residential stands and opening up of new roads in these areas is underway.”
According to the recent census records, Mutoko has a total population of 164 033 living in 29 wards.
The majority of the population lives in communal and small-scale farms.
Mr Sigauke said the council had managed to rehabilitate 90 percent of the boreholes dotted around its 29 wards.
“Over the past months, we have rehabilitated 418 boreholes out of a total of 467,” he said. “Electrification of Chikondoma Clinic is now in progress and the tubing has already been done.”
Mr Sigauke urged relevant stakeholders to assist with funds to enable them to complete projects that benefited the Mutoko community.
